Regulatory pressures and whimsical interpretation of the law by the authorities at the port of entry is taking its toll on the imports of wine in India. For once, wine has not been singled out and is being treated akin to other imported food and spirits. And, understandably, the mood in the importer community is rather low - they appear to be choking (and certainly not like the South Africans).
Sense needs to prevail. All authorities need to be made accountable for any glitches in their systems or their inability to process, and offer immediate remedies so that the players do not suffer any loss of time or money.
India is still an important market, and the world is impatient to unlock the potential. Strategies are being written to guide the stakeholders through the maze. India will have to walk its talk!
