Champagne Campus |
By vino india |
Champagne is the celebrated drink that is the drink of all celebration. A knowledge deficit is felt about Champagne among both consumers and trade channels across the world. The Comite Champagne (Comité interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne) is a joint trade organisation that represents the interests of the two main stakeholders in the region of Champagne – the growers and the houses. Among its various mandates is Champagne education, training and the dissemination of information, which is assigned in part to the global network of Comite Champagne in 16 countries. |
As a part of a progressive global digital media strategy, Comite Champagne has launched Champagne Campus – a free e-learning programme that proposes to complement the very informative existing digital resources like the website (Champagne.com), e-brochures, a YouTube channel, and a significant social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. |

Champagne Campus recognises that education is not just confined to the typical classroom and tasting set ups and expects to make education on the subject more easy and approachable to a wider audience of champagne lovers – just connect to the internet from anywhere in the world and learn from the comfort of their home. It is an e-learning tool that combines an attractive design, fun activities, videos, quizzes, teaching exercises etc., allowing those that engage to discover more about champagne - simply update or refresh their knowledge on champagne. |
At the time of launch, Champagne Campus is being offered in English, French and in a first such effort – in Chinese. More languages – Japanese and German – will be added by next year to help expand Champagne awareness in other key markets. |
Interactive and well-designed, Champagne Campus is available for free on four platforms – PC, Tablet, Mac and Smartphone. As an initiation, the course asks some questions to assess the level of the prospective student and recommends the suitable learning module – Novice, Enthusiasts and Lovers. In each level, the student goes through the journey of understanding – the region, the vine, the appellation, wine making and tasting. Wide-spread use of infographics, videos, quizzes and games help to make the whole learning experience very enjoyable, very un-classroom like and far from boring. The student has the option to peruse the levels independently, or taking them in the proposed order. At the end of each module, the student is assessed through a quiz that tests their new found wisdom – and Champagne Campus allows for bragging rights with a "click me" share option for immediate social media gratification. |
For on-the-go learning, a mobile app that compliments the website has been made available on both Android and iOS. This tests the learning with a score of questions which give a rounded insight into the region and wines of Champagne. |

From news feeds, vino india learnt about a recent announcement by the Open Wine University regarding a free private multilingual online course being offered for Bourgogne wines as part of the European Massive Open Online Course – open to all. Currently being taught in French and English, enrolment had already closed, so we couldn’t actually share a first-hand experience. |
With the launch of Champagne Campus, knowledge is no longer limited to wine lovers and connoisseurs but open to students and anyone who is inquisitive about the beverage – particularly the younger consumers who are more tech savvy and are attracted (maybe even addicted) to technology and the internet. After trying the Lover level of the Champagne Campus, vino india felt that it’s an informative, concise and aesthetically designed learning process with which understanding champagne becomes undoubtedly simple – like it would after an actual “champagne classroom”. A word of caution, though – it could leave you thirsty and desirous to savour some Champagne! |
