Content is steadily gaining as the new currency in this fast paced digital age. The urge to "know more" is driving demand but supply is unable to keep pace. In our own small wine world, I would stick my neck out to say that a lot of content is unlikely to pass the forensic test – plagiarism is rampant.
I attribute this to the good old system of Indian education, which is based on rote learning. The ability to re-produce the text book (complete with full stops and commas) in that crucial one exam has always been the key to the 100% scores. Any deviation has been penalised.
My hope lies in the new curriculums, where independent thought is unlikely to invite a rap on the knuckles and originality is rewarded.
Some would argue that plagiarised content is due to ignorance, but where content lifting is detected, no cognisance is taken and offenders nonchalantly carry on. I guess it would be out of place to expect an apology from them!
