From the Land of the Rising Sun |
By Ritu Singhal |
Gastronomy from Japan has caught the attention of the adventurous foodies in India. Sushi is as common place as dim sums and macaroons in the Indian food scene. The success of Japanese cuisine that was brought to India against all odds by the likes of the Nikko Hotels (Sakura) is celebrated by the masterchefs (Morimoto) and restaurants (Megu). |
Mr. Mitsuhiro Miyakoshi, Special Advisor to the Prime Minister of Japan (in-charge of Promoting Export of Agricultural Products and Revitalization of Rural Area), was in India to strengthen the growing ties between the two cultures. Agriculture and Food Processing sectors have been identified as a high priority area of co-operation between the two countries. He participated in a series of events to promote export of Japanese agricultural products and investment of Japanese food companies into India. |
H.E. Kenji Hiramatsu, the Ambassador of Japan in India hosted a Japan Food Reception at his residence in New Delhi. On the occasion, Mr. Miyakoshi said that there is growing interest in India from producers in the agricultural sector in Japan and that he had participated in the inauguration of Aahar to give a “pep talk” to promote food products from Japan. And wanted us to take his message further. |

H.E. Hiramatsu and his wine-expert wife, Patricia, had launched one of the first Japanese wines (Koshu by Grace) to be presented to India at the FINE Ambassadors’ and High Commissioners’ Table 2016. I was pretty sure that I would be able to re-visit some Sakes that they had shared with us some months ago. But, it was an absolute delight that he had chosen to present 6 wines and 1 sparkling wine (all grape based) at this reception – I forgot totally about the sake. |
