In May 2001, a first-of-its-kind-for-India wine dinner was hosted by The Wine Society in collaboration with Wines of Austria. The ticket was a princely sum of Rs. 1500 to savour 11 Austrian wines that were paired with a complete Indian thali by Rocky Mohan. A 100 guests who had pre-booked their seats, enjoyed the evening – and many walk-ins had to return dejected.
As the market for wine in India developed over the last 10-15 years, I remain convinced that the Indian oenophile will pay for a good experience. I might have alienated some wine "communities", but maintain that the offer (ticket price) must respect the wine being presented – even if perception of "value" could be accommodated.
Any wine experience should be priced "real" to reach those who appreciate it, and build a group of loyal wine enthusiasts that will take the Indian wine journey to the next level.
