Wines of South Australia – in India
Team vino india
The Government of South Australia announced that it had firmed up a multi-year visionary initiative – the South Australian Wine Education program led by the industry body SAWIA – to promote the wines of its various regions in India. After a rigorous selection process, Rajiv Singhal of the New Delhi based Group Ritu was chosen to partner this very important initiative.
The Hon. Martin Hamilton-Smith, Minister for Investment and Trade launched this program in Mumbai as part of the Government of South Australia’s 10-year engagement strategy during the visit to India of a South Australian Business delegation led by H. E. Hieu Van Le, Governor of South Australia. The Minister could not travel to Delhi, and Leonie Muldoon, Minister Commercial and Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner Austrade, made the announcement at the Murray Harris Room at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi.

In India, Australia enjoys the largest market share in the imported wine segment, driven by the runaway success of one brand. A proposal to improve the understanding and knowledge of South Australia as a premium wine producing region was accepted and “the powerhouse of Australian wine making”, South Australia, brought in a group of wine companies to showcase and share some wines and the South Australian wine story with the trade and influencers in Mumbai and New Delhi and to make inroads into the difficult-to-penetrate Indian market.
The alliance between the South Australian Wine Industry Association, Primary Industries & Regions South Australia and the Department of State Development that formed on the Australian side was able to fuel this program. With the Indian partner, Rajiv Singhal, it was decided that the program would be focussed on education and dissemination of information to the trade and media professionals.
The Hon. Minister said that the State of South Australia is extremely focused on export with more than half of its wines being shipped overseas and it was important to keep an eye on promising markets like India. He shared that in his several interactions with India in the last four years, he sees India as a wonderfully led, dynamic and sophisticated country and believes that Indians will embrace the wine and food culture that they were being exposed to.
Brian Smedley, Chief Executive SAWIA shared information on the wine industry in South Australia to highlight its dominant and leading role in the overall picture of Australian wine. He said that he was confident that the South Australian Wine Education Program in India led by Rajiv Singhal would develop confident, enthusiastic, loyal, passionate consumers in India whose purchase decision would be on the basis of their awareness and knowledge, and not just price anymore.
Rajiv Singhal thanked all the stakeholders on the Australian side for their faith and confidence in him. As one of the oldest standing players in the market for wine in India, he said that he would draw on his (and Group Ritu’s) decades of experience to create the desired engagement. This landmark project was a testimony to the vision of the Australians to grow their “share of throat” and aim for the Indian consumers’ acceptance of their offer.
With immediate plans to have professionals conduct education sessions in pop-up classrooms in Mumbai and New Delhi for the trade professionals to allow them to make informed choices about South Australian wine (in particular the premium range), the traditional market-place is in for a churn.
